In 2008 TSF underwent an extensive peer review and was selected for inclusion in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The NREPP is a resource that is used by individuals and organizations who wish to insure that they are utilizing evidence-based treatments. For details on TSF visit http://www.nrepp.samhsa.gov/ViewIntervention.aspx?id=55.
TSF has also undergone a peer review and was selected for inclusion in the American Psychological Association's official list of Evidence-Supported Treatments.

In 2009 TSF was included as an evidence-based practice in the latest edition of the National Institute of Drug Abuse publication Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research Based Guide. For more information visit www.drugabuse.gov/PODAT/Evidence2.html

TSF has been adapted by Dr. Nowinski for use with individuals who have both a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness. "TSFDD" is currently being evaluated in a 5-year clinical trial sponsored by NIAAA and implemented at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Initial results were recently reported at the 2008 meeting of the Research Society for Addictions.TSF has recently been adapted by Dr. Nowinski for use with individuals who have both a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness.
